Information for coordinators
Reach for the Stars 2007 is an activity which can involve the whole school.
The role of the school coordinator is to ensure that data from your school is lodged through this site. This won’t be onerous -- you just need to fill in an online "data submission" form (schools which did this before 9 pm on Friday Septemenber 7 2007 were eligible for entry in the Apple MacBook prize draw).
To help you to coordinate the activity, you can download the printable "Coordinator's kit". This includes a checklist of tasks, and information and record sheets which you can distribute to colleagues. You might also like to look at the suggestions and downloadable resources for generating your whole-school data summary.
If there is anything else you need, or if you have any questions, feel free to contact us.
Ideas for involving the school and the community
-
Line up to create a whole-school human 'bar graph' and examine the frequency distribution of "Foot Sizes" in your school. Look around and see whether there is a general trend for people with longer feet to be older/taller/girls etc. (remember to include staff and parents!)
- Invite each student to include a ribbon/streamer/string representing their height (and another for their foot length) in a whole-school display.
- The strings could be joined together and students asked to estimate how far the concatenated string would reach (from the front office to...; __ times around the basketball court etc.)
- Students' decorated footprints could be lined up along a corridor or other large floorspace.
- Use a Student Council to organise the event.
- Get a group of students to take on the role of School Coordinator.
- Invite parent involvement by requesting help with measuring and recording data (and don't forget to measure and report on them, too!)
- For several years, National Literacy and Numeracy Week has had a focus on "Learning Together" - there may be opportunities for older students to work with younger students on activities associated with Reach for the Stars.
- Work with students to create a display about your event for the school foyer, local shopping centre or public library.
- Tell another school about Reach for the Stars (perhaps a local pre-school or kindergarten, feeder primary school or nearby high school).
